Why did Kanakuk switch to SmugMug?

Daily photos have been a popular feature of the Kanakuk website. While not all the reasons are listed here there was one main event that started us down this road. Our hardware that printed photos was broken, outdated and unserviceable. Replacing it with the equipment to truly serve our needs was very costly. The decision was made to try and outsource the photo printing and at the same time raise the level of features and options available to our Kamp families. Despite some early glitches SmugMug was and still may be the best solution for this. Our intentions are to complete the summer of 2009 with SmugMug as the third party photo processor for Kamper photos. At the end of the summer we will analyze the service and consider staying with SmugMug or move toward another solution.

Daily photos are typically getting through the approval process by approximately Noon the day after they are taken. Cabin and individual photos are being worked on and progress was made today in getting them posted as well.

Thanks for your patience in all this.

What do we do if the camper in the cabin photo (the one where it is the camper alone with his counselors) is not our child. I think they have put the wrong kid's individual pic on my page. I would love to see my own kid. Can you help? Matt Filer Cabin 6 k2

Even with the "glitches" in getting the pictures up the first couple of days, I have been EXTREMELY pleased with the quality and quantity of photos - MUCH better than last year! :o) Thanks!

Cindi - If I'm seeing what you are seeing, then the thumbnail photo of the wrong child just represents the gallery with all of the Kampers from that Cabin. Click on the photo and you should see all of the Kampers. If you click and there's just the one then it means they are still approving the others. I know they were having some difficulties still with cabin and individual photos but I thought that it was fixed.

Kay - Yes the quality of the images is far better! We like it too!

We started getting a number of viruses and pop ups when on the smugmug website. We have never had these issues before. Has this been a problem for other people??

Kay said...

We have a Mac & they are not as susceptible to viruses so I haven't had any problems. However, I used smugmug before when I had a PC and had NO problems or viruses at all. My SIL is a photographer in LA & uses smugmug a LOT and has never mentioned an issue at all. Sorry you are encountering this! :o)

I just did a round of calls with everyone here and can't find another instance of pop-up or virus problems with SmugMug. If you have something happen again it might be good to grab a screen shot and send it to SmugMug. Are you able to see photos OK?

Still not able to access daily photos for K-1..I am a parent of a counselor logging in under their log-in. Have always looked forward to daily photos to try and catch random photos of her with the kampers. Any idea when K-1 will have daily action photos posted?

Staff photo access is not working and a solution is still trying to be worked out. Sorry about that!

Organic Husband said...

Cabin and individual photos should be there for all Kamps. In the list of action photo galleries there will be a gallery that contains just the cabin/barn/teepee photos and the individual Kamper with their counselors photos. The entire cabin is in that gallery so you'll have to look through them to find your Kamper.

I checked the individual cabin pics like you said...still no pics..

Sorry Teri! Too much going on in this thread:-)

Staff won't have access to photos until we get that fixed. I'll try and keep you posted.

Why have they not posted any pictures? I get an empty gallery frame from 6-22 and 1 picture from 6-23.
Thanks!

What did kanakuk do before they had their own photo machines?

Organic Husband said...

Greg- To the best of my knowledge after the conversion to digital almost 10 years ago Kanakuk has always printed their own photos until this year with SmugMug. Before the conversion to digital and on some jobs since a local processor was used.

Jay thanks so much for the response. You mentioned a local processor was/is used for some prints. Does this mean Smug Mug is cheaper for the Kamp families than having them deveoped by a local processor? I have noticed that the prices are higher than they use to be and there was no problems with pictures being uploaded before. Just a kamp family seeking for some answers... thanks for your blog! It has been very informative!
