Palin family minus new little guy, Trig.
Ask anyone, I vote, but I'm not political. I figure God already knows who's gonna win, so I spend my energies on other things, but Sarah Palin's explosion into the national spotlight has made me think.
If nothing else it seems to have highlighted the intensely diverse roll of women. Maybe you can relate. At 44 years old Sarah Palin is a self proclaimed "Hockey mom", mother of 5 in a 4 bedroom, 4 bath house, wife married for 20 years, small town church goer, oh, and Vice Presidential candidate!
It made me think of the many Kanakuk Kamps moms who drive the kids to school, work a job, do the family "books", attend church, serve on school committees, coordinate soccer teams, and lovingly tuck their little ones in bed at night. It's not so different from Sarah Palin's life really. Maybe you don't have handlers (maybe you wish you did?). Maybe you aren't scheduled for a national televised debate tonight, but standing before the school board fighting for character training funds is pretty big. Especially impressive when you spent the 4 hours prior closing a real estate deal, making dinner, and solving pre-algebra problems! What guides you through all that?
We are getting close to rolling out a new kanakuk.com; A foundational start to a new experience for our whole Kanakuk family. My dream of kanakuk.com becoming a "resource for your life" makes me want to stop and consider your diversity. What you are doing, what you are dealing with, what questions do you have, what connections do you want to make with us, and each other? How can we come along side with encouragement for your family throughout the year?
You may not be preparing for the Sarah Palin v. Joe Biden debate but, if you can relate to the hectic life of Sarah Palin, we are right there with you. We all need a solid foundation to stand on. Something absolute to cling to when the pressures get overwhelming.
Consider this today as you spread peanut butter: Psalms 119. It is 176 verses on the importance of relying on God's word for our every need. At least take with you the familiar verse 105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path." Take time to read God's Word you won't regret it.
Can you relate to Sarah Palin today? How?

Ok this is it for me, I had started reading this site as a way to stay connected with Kanakuk but the posts have had less and less to do with Kanakuk as the summer past. This one, about a woman who stumbles over every question asked her by the national media, will be the last one I read.
Maybe anonymous should have watched the debate last night in which Palin handled herself brilliantly. Back to your question, I think most moms are like her in that we work, we take care of a family and home and have very little time for anything else. As a single mom raising a son, I would love to have a place to pick up tips from others in the same situation as there aren't a whole lot of people at church who "look like me." I would also love to have Kanakuk think about adding weekend retreats for single parents and their kids rather than just the mother/daughter or father/son. My son doesn't have a lot of contact with his dad and a weekend where we could be with other people like us would be an amazing experience. We love Kanakuk and would read this blog even if you talked about politics every other day! I guess I am just looking for anything that would help others in the same place as me. Thanks for everything Kanakuk does.
All that was being done here was taking an current example from our everyday life as a jumping point into a deeper question. It simply relates to Moms, all that we do and what we'd like to see from the new site to help our families. This type of writing model is used so often in devotional writing...use a relevant current situation (in this case the hot topic, VP nominee) and relate it to our spiritual life and ask some questions from the reader for reflection. That's all. Give some grace and come on back. This is an embracing community. I am just a kanakuk parent felt led to share. Peace.
For Anonymous . . . Jay was just using a one paragraph example of a mom to lead into other things. He could have chosen a TV character, someone from a book, an actress, a story about a teacher, or he could have even chosen Tina Fey! But he chose a political candidate. No big deal. It really wasn't about Sarah Palin at all. Jay does a great job on this blog. You should keep reading to get great insight on Kanakuk. All of us, you included quite frankly, should just check political biases at the door, lighten up a little, and enjoy all things Kanakuk.
