Kanakuk's K-1 "K-Dome" Getting a Makeover #2

There's progress being made on the K-1 K-Dome makeover. As you can see in the photos the new wall structures are starting to take shape atop all new concrete footers. You might also notice the absence of the colorful murals that have been along the back wall of the K-Dome for many years. Those have been moved to storage with plans to put them back on display. The new location for those has not been determined, but they will maintain their place in the atmosphere of K-1!

Enjoy the day! Does this time of the year give you chills, like it does me? I just can't wait for summer to get here. There is just something about that first bus full of Kampers that rolls into the parking lot right outside my window. It's bigger than the start of football season, it's like 5000 men praising God at a Men at the Cross event. It just feels right. I don't see many of their faces (until I look through the 100,000+ photos) but I feel their hearts begin to beat long before I hear the grind of the bus engine up that last hill. It's electric!

To Kelley - I'm so glad you are going to be a part of it!

Monthly Payments Extended for Kanakuk families

Calculated monthly payments has been available for Kanakuk families for a couple of years now but not much has been said about it. Quite a few families use the option and it sure does make paying for Kamp a lot easier.

A friend of mine on twitter and a Kamp mom said: "After 8 years of coming up with mega $ on April 1 to send multiple kids to Kamp, I am loving the direct debit pymt plan! Good mktg tool too"

I took that to heart and worked hard over the Christmas break to put together a way to soften the payments even more. What I came up with was extending the payments all the way to May 1st. You can now login at www.myKanakuk.com, choose a child, choose this summers term and then click on Monthly payments. After that you just follow the steps to set-up a calculated monthly payment it defaults to adding one last payment on 5/1/09. That's 5 payments instead of 3. Could make a difference for you or for that friend who might be thinking about Kanakuk this summer. To extend the final tuition due date to May 1st you must set-up calculated monthly payments. The sooner you do it the lower the payments!

Let's be real, it doesn't take any less to provide the absolute best summer camping experience for Kanakuk kids, but we're all being just a little more careful with our money. It's a wise thing. Thanks for making the spiritual, social, & physical life of your kids a priority this summer by sending them to Kanakuk.

Side note: 2009 Summer theme has been picked. "Dare to Dream" You heard it here first.

Side note #2: Thank you for all the feedback on the new website! So much of it is positive that we feel like we are headed in the right direction. Some of you have expressed disappointments with one or more aspects and that is easily the most valuable input we could get. We are working on making improvements based on your feedback every day.

K-1 "K-Dome" Getting a Makeover

This photo was taken during Tournament day in the 1940's on the "bottoms" at K-1. That location is just a stones throw from where the K-1 K-Dome is getting a makeover. Here are some photos of the current state of construction. Click to enlarge.

The project, which may be completed in 2 phases includes:

Phase 1 -
  1. Adding air-conditioned men's and women's bathrooms
  2. Adding an elevated stage between the bathrooms on the West end (closest to the Dining Hall)
  3. Extending and enclosing the East side and adding bleachers for more seating

Phase 2 -
  1. Enclosing the North and South walls, adding 6x8 ft roll-up doors along the walls
  2. Installing sprinkler system
  3. Installing Air-Conditioning to be used during closing ceremonies.
I don't know all the details on the funding for this project but with out complete funding Phase 2 will have to be done next year or later.

To make these changes to the K-Dome a special variance had to be granted because the building additions would be inside the 25 foot road set back. You might have seen the following in this Branson Daily News article.

On Wednesday, the Board of Adjustment also voted to approve a request for variance from Kanakuk Kamps. The camp owners are planning to build an addition to an existing structure that will encroach into the setback area. The variance request consisted of a 5 foot 6 inch encroachment into the setback area along Lakeshore Drive.
This project is being managed by Kanakuk Kamps' Dean Dewitt, Construction Maintenance Manager and Byron Joplin, Taney County Construction Superintendent. Those two are always making things better around here!

Big Change Coming on Monday

You've never been able to do this at Kanakuk!

For over 85 years Kanakuk Kamps has provided an "Exciting Adventure in Christian Athletics". Over 85 years of impacting kids in a way that shows them the love of Christ. For all those years Kanakuk has lovingly and caringly placed kids of the same age in cabins together with 2 or 3 of the best counselors we could find in the world. It's worked great and kids always leave with friendships that can and often do last a lifetime. More choice is coming!

On Monday we are launching Bunk with a Friend!  Parents and kids will have the opportunity to choose one friend that has a birthday within one year of the Kamper to stay in the same cabin with them. All of this will be done online through Parent's Place. You can make a request and approve a request online. Then manage the request as needed.

This new feature is a great opportunity to invite your friends to Kanakuk or just make sure you stay with that Kamp friend you made last year.

We'll be sending out an e-mail on Monday (unless there's a glitch:-)) that will explain it all in detail.

I'm in Omaha, NE and I'll be back in Branson on Sunday. Joe White has begun a new ministry this year called Men at the Cross that seeks to reach men with the vision of the Paul/Timothy Discipleship model given us in the Word of God. It's a message that men are hungry for; God is blessing these events. You'll see me sharing more about it in the weeks to come. Next week is Forth Worth and then Hersey, PA the following week.

Heather Headley sang this morning and it was just amazing! I've never felt someone sing with that much emotion in my entire life. She has an amazing talent and heart for worshiping God. I can't begin to describe it but I'm glad I'll hear her again in Hershey.

New I'm Third Movie

I am absolutely busting at the seams! Our Media Director Tim Oliphant, also of American Gladiator fame, just finished a new short film that communicates the I'm Third philosophy.
The I'm Third life philosophy has been a foundation of Kanakuk for so many years and a vital part of the growth that Kampers experience during a term here. One of Tim's strengths is Communication and he does such a great job of piecing things together so that you and I can feel it too.

Enjoy this short film and please leave your comments about it.

This is a preview. We'll eventually have a fully credited, high quality version available over at www.kanakuk.com. While I'm at it I'll leak something about the new website: We are planning special "easter eggs" on the home page of the new site. The first one will be typing "JOY" on the keyboard then you'll get a surprise. New www.kanakuk.com coming in September.

K-Kauai Kanakuk Family Kamp Chapel Dedication

The outside of the newly dedicated Hale Makua (House of God) Chapel at K-Kauai - Kanakuk Family Kamp.

Yesterday morning the new chapel building named the Hale Makua (House of God) was dedicated at K-Kauai - Kanakuk Family Kamp in Branson, MO.

In the Chapel, after the morning session with speaker, Greg Smalley, parents stayed to share in the dedication ceremony. Doug Goodwin, the Executive Director of K-Kauai, shared briefly with the parents about the opening day of K-Kauai in 2007. Months of hard work had culminated in a flurry of last minutes problems , but things were being taken care of and finally the grounds were all ready for the first families to arrive. Then the rain came. Several inches of rain in 45 minutes just minutes before the gates were to open. I remember that rain because my wife and I had dropped two of our kids off at K-Kountry just 15 minutes earlier. The torrent of rain came and and washed away much of the landscaping that had just been completed that morning, water flooded many of the newly finished cabanas, just that afternoon carefully cleaned and ready for families to move in. Doug described sitting, in the rain, near one of the pump stations with tears in his eyes, he realized that it wasn't going to be his strength that fixed this mess. At that moment he gave the opening day, the disaster recovery, the months of hard work to the Lord. God brought all the right people to aid in the recovery, provided just the right resources, and that first week of Kamp was amazing.

Doug described that the Chapel would be used during the winter months as the classroom for the Kanakuk Institute students. Half of the theater seating will be replaced with tables during that time.

Worship in the Hale Makua

Doug told everyone that dedicating new buildings is a tradition at Kanakuk and that he was thankful those attending Kamp that week could take part in this. He prayed and then there was a time of worship, and singing led by some of the K-Kauai summer staff.

Joe White

Joe White, President of Kanakuk Kamps, then got up and spoke. He talked about K-Kauai being a "Kingdom dream" a place that was often requested by families over the years. Doug Goodwin, he said, had a vision for the family Kamp and Joe said Doug should be the one to build it. Joe said that a family trip to Hawaii was the inspiration for the island theme.
Joe had arrived during the worship time and he related to the gathering how it might seem like a small thing but that it was really special to see all the couples holding hands or with arms around each other. It might be a small thing but a part of the dream for K-Kauai.

Joe gave some history on the spiritual foundation of America, the removal of the 10 commandments, and the downward spiral that has occured the farther we get from that Godly foundation. He said that President Reagan referred to families as the "bricks and morter of America." The dream is being fulfilled that Kanakuk Family Kamp would build up and support the bricks and morter of this country.

Joe addressed the timing of the chapel being built by saying that as construction plans were made funds ran low and it was God's timing and the realization that this place needed a special indoor chapel that brought us to this point.

Joe thanked everyone for participating in the dedication and turned the ceremony back over to Doug.

Doug shared stories of people impacted at Kanakuk Family Kamp over that last 3 summers. Even this summer already many kids have placed there faith in Jesus Christ. When they do, they ring the bell in the middle of Kamp as a public proclemation of their decision. The bell has been rung so much this summer that it's broken and being replaced with a better, stronger bell.

Doug shared that Family Kamp has introduced many families to Kanakuk and now their children have experienced the depth and impact of one of our Kamps for kids. Doug asked for people to join them in prayer that the mission and impact of the Kamp might continue.

The Dedication Prayer

Everyone in attendance got up and surrounded the sanctuary seating, holding hands, there was just enough to reach around. Will Cunningham, Co-Director of K-Kauai Kanakuk Family Kamp, open the circle in prayer. Doug then prayed a prayer of dedication and thanks to God, expressing a desire for more impact and God's blessing on the Kamp, the Chapel and all the families that come there.

The Dedication was then closed and many of the families stayed around laughing and talking for several minutes.

Joe and Doug stayed to talk to a few families as others cleared out to head to lunch and reconnecting with their kids.

The Chapel Foyer

The Hale Makua Chapel is themed like the rest of the camp with bamboo trim and weaved bamboo ceiling panels. A tall rectangular window at the front is surrounded by beautiful stone work. A custom stained glass window is planned with the cross and tennis shoes logo. A small stage at the front shares the same stone work. The building is equipped with a professional sound system, video projection, and stage lighting, and men's and women's bathroom facilities.

In my 8 years with Kanakuk I have experienced many dedications of facilities, programs and people. I appreciate seeing God get the glory for the things that happen at this place. It's clear that God uses Kanakuk to show His love. I'm glad that I can be a part of it even in a very small behind the scenes way. It's also fun to share these things with you because I know, you too, see God at work here and enjoy rejoicing with us.

Do you have a Kanakuk Family Kamp experience you can share with others? Leave a comment below.

Jason Arellano - New employee announcement

INTERNAL KANAKUK MEMO

DATE: July 8, 2008

TO: Kanakuk Kamps

FROM: Human Resources Department

SUBJECT: New Employee

Please welcome Jason Arellano to the sales and purchasing department. I asked Jason to tell me a little about himself and I don’t think I can improve on his own words. Please note that Heath will be with us for a few more weeks, but we all need to contact Jason as if Heath were not here. This will help him adjust to his new duties.

I will be replacing Heath as he moves on to teach and coach. My wife and I married in April of 2006 and are expecting our first child - Lindsey is 5 months pregnant. I served 5 years in the Marine Corps and have traveled the world. I took part in two tours of combat and closed this chapter of my life after being shot and hit with a grenade. Lindsey and I now reside in Springfield, MO with my mother-in-law and father-in-law while we are waiting for our home to sell in K.C., MO. We are praying for the family that will eventually call our home theirs. My wife was a camper and counselor here at Kanakuk for several years and I have always wanted to be a part of the ministries. Kanakuk is a great organization with solid values centered on Christ and I am honored to do my part in changing the lives of future generations.

I love my family and anything that has to do with the outdoors. I have faced death in the eyes and it has given me a greater appreciation for life. I thank the Lord for each and every day as I have been given many 2nd chances. I look forward to meeting and working with everyone on staff.

Semper Fidelis

Slow Motion Video

I got it. A quick sample of the kind of shots we are getting with the high frame rate camera. Max Monty (talented dude!) is shooting this stuff for us with his camera. When he's not working for us he's doing his own thing at www.maxwellmonty.com.

Summer 2009 is already filling up!

Yikes! My son went to Kamp 1st term and his chigger bites aren't even gone, and yet I can report that the K-Kountry 7-Day term 2 for girls is already full and developing a wait list! The boy's spots that term are almost full as well. When the Directors see that kind of response to their programs it's a real boost as they pour out their energy for these kids.

**New** We are shooting some video footage this summer with a special camera that captures up to 1200 frames per second. Whoa!! It's amazing! You can see every drop of water, every wrinkle of a smile it's really cool stuff. Look for those unique shots in the Kanakuk videos over the next year. If I can get some prepared I'll put them on the web so you can check it out.

Thanks for reading. Tell a friend. http://insidekanakuk.blogspot.com/
